News from Quantum Realm

Storing your crypto carefully is sound practice, but against a quantum computer, it mostly misses the point. The quantum threat isn't someone stealing your key out of storage. It's a future scenario in which a capable enough machine could derive your private key from a quantum-vulnerable public key available to the attacker, whether disclosed on-chain or elsewhere. Therefore, quantum-safe storage needs a careful definition before you shop for it.

No, Hyperliquid isn't quantum-safe today. Its HyperCore user actions and HyperEVM transactions rely on Ethereum-compatible elliptic-curve signatures that a sufficiently capable quantum computer could forge. This guide covers where Hyperliquid's quantum exposure sits and what HYPE holders can do about it.

Ethereum isn't quantum-resistant today. Its standard externally owned accounts sign transactions with elliptic-curve cryptography, and its validators sign with a related scheme. Both can be broken by a capable enough quantum computer. That said, Ethereum has one of the most active post-quantum migration efforts of any major chain. This guide covers why Ethereum is exposed and what its roadmap proposes, as of September 2026.

A quantum-resistant blockchain is built to stay secure against a cryptographically relevant quantum computer, the kind that could someday break the public-key signatures securing today's accounts. The exposed layer consists of those transaction signatures, which prove you authorized a spend. The rest of the chain, including the hashing that secures mining and links blocks, is in far better shape, though not invulnerable.

The first quantum-safe vault available to everyone has passed independent security audits Panama, September 22, 2026 — qLABS, a quantum-native Web3 foundation, today announced that qVAULT.xyz, the first vault to make post-quantum protection available to any holder of digital assets, has completed independent security audits of both its smart contracts and its post-quantum cryptography by Fairyproof and TechsLayers. qVAULT.xyz is live on Hyperliquid's HyperEVM, where it protects HYPE and its native token qONE against the emerging quantum threat to digital assets way before any major blockchain is expected to migrate its own cryptography.

Today, none of the cryptocurrencies on the largest blockchains can be considered quantum-resistant at the protocol level. The major chains, Bitcoin and Ethereum included, still authorize transactions with elliptic-curve signatures that a capable enough quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could break. A small set of purpose-built chains are the exception, and the big networks sit at very different stages of doing something about it.

If you've been reading about quantum computers and what their advent means for your crypto, a quantum-safe wallet sounds like a good fix. You merely move your coins into the right app and the quantum threat goes away. If only it were that easy. A wallet by itself can't change the signature rules on which a blockchain runs. It signs with whatever the chain's native accounts require, so on a chain that uses ECDSA today, the wallet signs with ECDSA, quantum weakness and all.

No blockchain is guaranteed to be immune to every future attack, so the phrase ‘quantum-proof crypto' promises more than any system can deliver today. Most major chains still run the quantum-vulnerable signatures they always ran, though a few newer ones have already started to use post-quantum signatures. If you’re a crypto holder, you should cut specific exposure now and move toward quantum-safe options as they mature.

SPHINCS+ is the hash-based backup in NIST's post-quantum signature toolkit. NIST's primary post-quantum signature standard, ML-DSA, rests on structured lattice problems, and so does the still unfinalized FN-DSA. Meanwhile, SPHINCS+ takes a different route and bases its security on the well-studied properties of hash functions. This gives NIST a fallback that a lattice breakthrough wouldn’t drag down, though its signatures are much bigger.

ML-KEM is the post-quantum algorithm you may already be using. It protects the key exchange behind encrypted connections, and it's rolling out as we speak, from web browsers to messaging apps. NIST standardized it in 2024 as FIPS 203, based on the scheme once called Kyber.
